3.10.17: National – (Politics): The U.S. President who boasts of his ability to hire the best people and whose most controversial executive order is rooted in extreme vetting of immigrants appears to have made a terrible hiring decision in Lt. Michael Flynn, the former National Security Adviser who resigned, or was fired – it all depends on who from the White House is talking to the news media – after misleading officials about his communications with the Russians, and who wasn’t at all thoroughly vetted given the recent revelation that he was working as a foreign agent during the presidential election.
According to the White House, President Donald J. Trump was unaware that Mr. Flynn, who was fired from the Obama Administration a few years ago, had earned more than half a million dollars lobbying for a company owned by a Turkish businessman which could’ve aided the Turkish government. Disclosure of the lobbying didn’t occur until this week when Mr. Flynn’s firm filed paperwork with the Department of Justice’s Foreign Agent Registration Unit.
Vice President Mike Pence, who was misled by the disgraced former National Security Adviser about his conversation with a Russian ambassador, said the revelation was “an affirmation of the president’s decision to ask General Flynn to resign.”

It’s staggering to know that Mr. Trump, who this week re-introduced his travel ban with Iraq absent from the list of Muslim-majority countries, will vet those seeking to come to the country in a way greater than those who help run it via his cabinet. The juxtaposition comes across both hypocritical and incompetent. Hypocritical because the message is: do as I say, not as I do – extreme vetting for immigrants, lackadaisical inquiry of federal appointees; and incompetent due to such a gross failure in management and research.
Mr. Trump’s White House is suffering from a trust and credibility deficit, and it’s likely, even almost certain, that this news will exacerbate it. The President in his first speech to Congress proved he could behave for an hour or so, and appear presidential, but he’s yet to prove that he takes this job, one of the most powerful, influential and visible in the world, seriously.
If Mr. Flynn’s controversy was an isolated incident, Mr. Trump could be given the benefit of the doubt. But this occurrence, instead, follows a pattern of questionable, odd and seemingly unethical behavior by individuals, many who have ties to a foreign government, recruited by Mr. Trump to serve the public.
By now it should be known that Mr. Trump isn’t as advertised; he’s not surrounding himself with the best people, like he claimed he would, and he’s not as informed as he proclaimed. The truth is, America was sold a lemon, and it will either live years with a sour taste on its tongue, or it’ll revolt.
