Philadelphia Game Lab

Our goal in founding the Philadelphia Game Lab is to create a nexus for creative and technical learning and collaboration in the Philadelphia area. We are working with local universities as well as game industry experts and entities to form a community where the full value of local resources can be a destination point for publishers, investors, and related businesses.

Most game development teams in Philadelphia consist of 2-6 members, and we will begin with a capacity of 12 teams. Our location is in Center City Philadelphia, close to universities and at the center of the business, art and non-profit communities. The physical space will serve both the ongoing needs of the resident development community as well as other developers and interested entities with a variety of sessions and events generally available. Our goal for the first year is to have flexible membership fees that will be partially sponsored. We will also have ongoing scholarships for university teams, and ongoing educational initiatives for teens.

We are structured to operate under an experienced board of directors, in coordination with a game-industry focused board of advisors, and several appropriate committees of experts in their fields. The advisory board includes representatives of all significant local universities and game industry experts in areas such as marketing, law, gamification, and business development. We draw from nationwide resources in the game industry.

The creative economy of Philadelphia has achieved national status as a result of some meaningful successes driving broad recognition; it forms perhaps the most significant element of an environment in which population is growing and lifestyle choices continue to drive desirability of housing stock. At the same time, though, there continues to be a mismatch between the very large number of skilled technical and creative people, especially students, and the small number of creative work opportunities in this city. The bulk of such young people will depart from the city after graduation. This initiative is intended as one of many to improve specifically this situation.

We are located at:
